Writing Timeline.

I’ve never realized just how neurotic I can be. Scratch that. Check.

Hello! I’ve had an epiphany over this weekend with where exactly I want to go with my writing. For many months, I’ve deliberated on testing out the waters of traditional publishing via finding an agent and self-publishing. I’m very capable of making hard, adult decisions. I’ve always considered it a strength – especially in this case. I never knew where I would go between both publishing arenas.

Self-Publishing For the Win.

Upon closer examination and research, I’ve realized just how much control I yearn to have with my projects. I don’t want some top executive at a publisher to steal the rights to my books away from me. If my book is getting turned into a movie, I want to be the one who steers the tides and has the final say-so. You guessed it! I’m a control freak. I am a very detailed-oriented person who is capable of organizing things in such a way that I can control things. That certainly sounds a hell of a lot better!

Although I’m not even 2k words into my first draft of my first novel, I now have a (very soft) business plan/task list for the next 2 to 3 years of my life. Admittedly, I’m a task master. Give me a checklist, and I want to scratch, hack, and slash at it until it’s bleeding out in the dirt after being run over by my metaphorical steamroller. I get such a kindergarten-level sense of accomplishment when I finish any checklist – that’s just who I am. Checklists are my lifeblood. Naturally, I’d spend 8 hours of my life drafting up my life for the next 3 years (respectively).

These lists have been divided into categories for ease and clarity. I think it’s interesting to know other writers’ writing progress. Because I’m highly compulsive and (only slightly) neurotic, I’ve provided you with my action items for the foreseeable future. You’ll see a few items have already been KO’d. I’m leaving all these tasks live on this post to tabulate where I’m at at the end of this year. I’ll probably follow up at some point closer to the end of 2017. Until then, enjoy!

Personal Goals

  • Research into forming an LLC (publishing company)
  • Organize money and resources for LLC process
  • Form LLC publishing company by June 15th, 2017
  • Create and design publishing website
  • Reveal LLC/publishing company on YouTube by July 1st, 2018
  • Write 2k per day (starting May 1st, 2017)
  • Draft YouTube video ideas by end of May 2017
  • Publish 1 video at least every 10 days on YouTube
  • Blog at least 3 times per month starting in May 2017
  • Build/network w/ a close group of writer friends
  • Overhaul author website to move into promoting GR by October 31st, 2018
  • Create a subscriber/newsletter list on author website to catch interest early
  • Find beta readers online to send manuscript to (start now, finalize by August 1st  November 2017)
  • Release chapter 1 of GR by September 15th, end of 2017 on blog
  • Post chapter 2 of GR by September 30th, beginning of 2018 on blog
  • Release chapter 3 of GR by October 15th, March 2018 on blog
  • Research cover design artists (started preliminary list)
  • Decide on a cover artist by December 31st, 2017
  • Deliberate sending GR to another professional editor (aside from S******)
  • Sign up for Ingram Spark & Createspace / Amazon Author page w/ GoodReads page
  • Do a cover reveal on YouTube by February 17th, 2018
  • List Gravity Rising on Ingram Spark / Createspace by February 28th, 2018
  • Seek out ARC copy giveaways in exchange for book reviews & giveaways for the ebook by January 30th, 2018
  • Design a marketing campaign for social networks for Gravity Rising
  • Publish Gravity Rising summer/fall 2018
  • Publish one book at a maximum of 9 months between each other
  • Design an author logo for future swag and printed marketing Have someone design a logo for website, social media, & books

Gravity Rising

  • Finish outline in April 2017 during Camp NaNoWriMo
  • Finish main and villain character sheets April /early May summer 2017
  • Write 100k in 75 days beginning May 1st Finish first draft by end of August 2017
  • Finish writing July 14th, 2017
  • Begin soft, self-edit July 15th – August 15th, August 2017
  • Send to W***** & A*** for plot / character critique August/September 2017
  • Send manuscript to S****** for hard edit August 16th, end of September 2017
  • Get comments back by September 15th, end of October 2017 from A*** & W*****
  • Make edits & slice manuscript; another soft edit until Sept. 30th, end of November 2017
  • Send back to S****** by Oct. 1st, December 2017
  • Get back by Nov. 15th, January 11th, 2018; ignore for the rest of this month

Artificial Vessels

  • Use Scrivener to outline basic plot points by end of summer fall 2017
  • Plan / begin detailed outlining for NaNoWriMo October 1st, 2017
  • Create more solid, developed side characters for this book
  • Begin writing during November 2017 for Camp NaNoWriMo
  • Write during April 2018 for Camp NaNoWriMo
  • Edit between May – July 2018
  • Rewrites/revisions until end of September 2018
  • Send to cover artist by December 2018
  • Expected release date: spring/summer 2019

Zenith Strain

  • Outline main ideas in this book by end of summer 2018
  • Begin detailed outlining/writing during July 2018 for Camp NaNoWriMo
  • Write during November 2018 for NaNoWriMo

Echelon Stasis

  • Deliberate & settle on title by December 31, 2017
  • Outline main ideas in this book by end of winter 2018
